The simple past and the past progressive, also past continuous, are used to express actions in the past. We use the simple past as the narrative form of the past to express completed, sequential actions. We use the past progressive to say what was happening at a particular moment in the past, to set the scene and to emphasise the process or duration of a past action.

The simple past (also called past simple, past indefinite or preterite) is a  verb tense  which is used to show that a completed action took place at a specific time in the past. The simple past is also frequently used to talk about past habits and generalizations.  The simple past is formed using the  verb + ed . In addition, there are many  verbs with irregular past forms . Questions are made with  did  and negative forms are made with  did not . Affirmative :  You  called  Debbie. Question:   Did  you  call  Debbie? Negative:  You  did not call  Debbie. A modal is a type of  auxiliary (helping) verb  that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation. Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are used to express the same things as modals, but are a combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to. The modals and semi-modals in English are: 1.
